About Us
Smooinaght Mie (Good Idea in Manx gaelic) are a folk group who formed in 2024 over a shared passion for Manx traditional music and language, and blending this with original tunes and arrangements.
Although we are firmly rooted in the Gaelic idiom of the Isle of Man, we incorporate elements from the world’s many diverse traditions in a sensitive and tasteful way - with a strong emphasis on rich vocal harmonies and varied, dynamic arrangements.
The band members grew up playing traditional music together in various ensembles, which lead to opportunities abroad at Festival Interceltique de Lorient (Brittany), Cwlwm Celtaidd (South Wales) and Cropredy Festival (Oxfordshire, England). We have drawn on this experience to create a sound that is both powerful and sensitively crafted, leading with the strength of the instrumentation; featuring piano, cello, guitar, melodeon, harp and fiddle.
Smooinaght Mie are aiming to push Manx music forward in a fresh and accessible way, whilst remaining true to the living and evolving tradition which gave us our foundation.
